Helsinki Graduate School of Economics gains insight to develop culture

Helsinki GSE partnered with Inklusiiv to gain expert insights into building a more inclusive and internationally attractive culture.

Understanding the experiences of a diverse academic community

The Helsinki Graduate School of Economics (Helsinki GSE) unites Aalto University, Hanken School of Economics and the University of Helsinki. Together, they aim to strengthen economics research and education, collaboration, and societal and international impact.

In 2025, Helsinki GSE wanted to understand how its students, researchers, lecturers and professors experience inclusion, belonging, and respect. The Equality Committee also wanted to use this insight to guide long-term culture and strategy work.

They partnered with Inklusiiv to conduct a climate survey.

After running a similar survey internally, they chose Inklusiiv for our expertise in workplace culture, ability to interpret complex data ethically, and to gain an outside perspective that could highlight both strengths and development areas.

“We wanted a partner who could look at our data with depth and objectivity. Inklusiiv brought both expertise in culture development and analytical insight. They helped us see what matters most and how to move forward.” — Mari Kröger, Project Manager, Helsinki Graduate School of Economics

Turning data into direction

Inklusiiv conducted the 2025 climate survey, gathering and analysing perspectives from students, researchers, lecturers, and professors across all three universities. The process ensured anonymity and a smooth experience for all participants.

The analysis highlighted patterns and differences between groups and provided intersectional insights into experiences of inclusion, respect, and sense of community.

The key findings were formulated into practical recommendations to build community, improve transparency, and strengthen inclusive leadership.

Insights that guide long-term cultural work

The collaboration gave Helsinki GSE a clear and credible picture of how its community works in practice. It highlighted both what’s going well and what can be improved.

“The added value Inklusiiv brings is clear. We wouldn’t have gained such actionable insights into developing our culture without their external expert perspective. The process, structure, and content of the project were all of exceptional quality. We now have the clarity and confidence to take the next steps in our culture work.” — Torsten Santavirta, Equality Committee, Helsinki Graduate School of Economics

The insights now guide Equality Committee discussions and inform GSE’s upcoming strategy.

They support Helsinki GSE’s broader ambition to attract and support the education of future economists and to produce high-quality research through collaboration.
